The smartest money in tech has stopped asking "what AI company do I build?" and started asking "what cash-flowing business do I buy and rewire?"
The receipts, all from the last twelve months:
Thrive Holdings raised $2B at a $12B valuation in August (SoftBank, D1, Altimeter), with OpenAI as a shareholder since December 2025 — embedding research and engineering teams directly inside acquired accounting firms and MSPs.
General Catalyst has co-created an entire fleet of these: Crescendo (support), Eudia (legal), Titan (IT services), Long Lake (which just completed the $6.3B all-cash take-private of American Express Global Business Travel in September, calling itself "the world's first AI holding company").
Dwelly raised $263M in under six months to buy UK letting agencies and run them on one AI platform — 10 acquisitions in 2026 alone.
CNBC formally named the category on June 8, 2026: "AI rollup: Silicon Valley's new buyout playbook hits Wall Street."
